The players union has been vocal about their support for the new anthem book and said they were willing to pay $10,000 to the authors for it, which is a substantial amount compared to the NFL’s standard fee for its books.
However, NFL Players Association President DeMaurice Smith said Monday that he was open to a compromise.
Smith said that the players union’s position was that “a book should be done, not by a few players, but by the majority of the players in our league, and that’s what the league will be able to do,” according to the Associated Press.
“We will continue to fight for the right to write the anthem, and the players are very supportive of the effort,” he added.
“They want to write a book, but they also understand the political implications.”
